The
Forbes Family of Virginia includes descendants of Rev. John Holcomb Forbes
and Mary Henry Nance Forbes, residents of Pittsylvania County VA from the
1840s through the 1890s. Rev. Forbes ministered to blue and gray
soldiers in the hospital and prison in Danville, VA during the Civil War.
Rev.
Forbes was a local Methodist minister serving churches in VA and
neighboring counties of NC.
John's father and mother, Peter and Mary Forbes came
from Scotland, and settled in Rockbridge Co. VA where Rev. John was born
in 1817. We know that John had a
brother, William, but our knowledge of his
parents or any other siblings is scant.
Clan-related Virginia and North Carolina
counties include: Pittsylvania County Virginia, Rockbridge County
Virginia, Halifax County Virginia, Person County North Carolina
(check out the surnames
website for Person County) and
Caswell County North Carolina.
Cousins Dee Smith and Doris Brooks have published family histories and
quarterly newsletters. The family has enjoyed bi-annual reunions since
1989. The 1997 reunion was in Danville, VA and celebrated our Civil
War heritage. The next reunion is scheduled June 22-23, 2002 in
Virginia Beach, VA. Other reunions and trips to Scotland have
highlighted our Scottish heritage.
The above photo is Reverend Garland Pollard Morgan II
(Gary), great-great grandson of Reverend John Holcomb Forbes. Yes, he
really is playing our favorite Amazing Grace. |
